Sebugwaawo Ismail
27 July 2010 RAS AL KHAIMAH - The Department of Economic Development (DED) in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) seized huge quantities of mobile phones from vendors and hawkers on Kuwait Street and imposed fines of Dh500 for illegal
businesses activities.
Ali Abdullah Al Mazrui, who heads the Oversight Consumer Protection Department at DED, said the department was tipped off by residents
about vendors who were selling
mobile phones on various streets in Ras Al Khaimah.
Some of the phones were being carried in bags and when one of the vendors saw the inspectors, he tried to throw the bag on the ground and run away but the inspectors managed to catch him and he was handed over to the police.
The police found out that the detained vendor was staying in the country illegally after his visa expired eight months ago.
Mazrui said it was illegal hawking products like mobile phones without obtaining a commercial licence.
He stressed that people operating
illegal businesses on many occasions sell fake and pirated products to the consumers.
