PET SHOPS
Although there are some commercial pet shops in Ras Al Khaimah, sadly none of them can be recommended. Usually, animals sold there are ornamental fish, birds, hamsters, cats, dogs and sometimes even exotic animals. Very often these animals are kept in poor conditions and employees of these places do not have an adequate knowledge about pets and do not know how to handle them.

LOOKING FOR A PET
Despite the fact that the UAE has signed the Convection of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in 1990, and is an active in efforts to stop illegal trade, the trade in endangered animals is still a problem in the UAE. Often very exotic species such as rare parrots, young chimpanzees, gorillas, crocodiles and even lions or leopards are smuggled into the country. When purchasing an animal, you should check carefully the source and whether this animal is on the CITES endangered list.

Before buying a dog or cat at the pet shop, consider to adopt an animal from one of the animal shelters. It is estimated that between 80 to 100 animals are abandoned every month in the UAE. PET FOOD
Most of the big supermarkets in Ras Al Khaimah sell dry and wet food for dogs and cats. Carrefour also sells food for birds and hamsters. Some of the well-known commercial brands like Whiskas, Pedigree, Chappi, Royal Canin and Friskies are sold here. For more specific pet foods you should visit pet shops or veterinary clinics in other emirates.
Iams and Eukanuba pet food is available from the RAK Animal Welfare Centre. The food is sold at the same prices as in shops in the other emirates. Additionally, you will receive a loyalty card. For every four bags you will buy from the centre, you will receive one free bag of the same size. |
