Registration of a Vehicle

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE

Whether your car is new or second hand it has to be registered at the RAK Police Traffic Department. In case of a new car your dealer should arrange the registration procedure for you, but with a second hand car you have to arrange everything yourself.

Once your vehicle insurance is completed, you should go to the RAK Traffic Police Department, together with the seller of the car. Both seller and buyer should bring a copy of their passports and residence visa, and the seller must present the vehicle registration card. Furthermore, the previous owner must pay all outstanding fines, so the buyer will not be held responsible for them. All the necessary forms ought to be presented in Arabic, which can be arranged at one of the typing offices situated in the police building. Make sure to bring cash with you as the fee for arranging the registration of a car is approximately 500dhs.

RENEWAL OF A CAR REGISTRATION

Car registration has to be renewed annually, and if you miss the date, you may have to pay a fine of around 150dhs. Cars that are older than three years have to be tested at a mechanical testing department approved by the RAK Police Traffic Department. You have to provide a copy of your driving licence, a vehicle registration card, passport, residence visa and, of course, an insurance contract. If you have any speeding or parking fines, you must pay them before proceeding. To fill out all the necessary documents, you have to go to the typing offices that will type out everything in Arabic. Fees for the registration and car testing add up to around 180dhs. All this can be arranged at the Shamil Vehicle Testing and Registration Department.
