| Dhow Building Station | |

The inhabitants of Julfar and later of Ras Al Khaimah were well known seafarers and navigators. They were also recognized as excellent dhow builders that created a large fleet for the Qawasim family. The dhows were also essential for sea trading, fishing and pearling, prominent occupations of the residents.
The rich tradition of dhow building continues into the 21st century and Ras Al Khaimah still has a dhow building station situated just along the coast. Since the traditional methods cannot compete anymore with modern techniques of boat construction, the profession of dhows building is now more a prestige matter rather than a business affair.
You can observe how dhows are made and it is rather an interesting experience. Once at the site, it is clear what an amazing effort it is to construct a dhow and that it takes many months before the work is finished.
In the waters in front of the building station several old dhows lie abandoned creating a picture as if taken directly from a sea battlefield. Nearby, a small fishing bay gives an opportunity for wonderful photo shots.
