Mizra'a Tower

In the middle of the desert stands a tower hidden between the ghaf trees. Although, the beginnings of this tower are shaded in mystery, it was probably constructed to support the defence system of the coastal town of Al Jazirat Al Hamra. Most likely, the tower also served as a refuge for the Bedouins in times of intertribal conflicts. The tower is a mud brick construction surrounded by a ditch. It must have been a fairly large fortification but now the remains are less than 5m high.

Even a few years back, the tower was less accessible, but since the Emirates Road (E311) and other smaller roads were constructed nearby, the place is visited by many people. The area is especially popular amongst the local families, and on Fridays in the winter time it is difficult to find a peaceful spot there. If you manage to avoid the crowd, it is a very interesting place to visit, as this tower is one of a kind and its location is rather charming. T

he area around the tower has many ghaf trees, which together create a small forest and give a unique atmosphere to the desert. It is wonderfully green, especially after winter rainfalls. The ghaf trees are now protected, but they continue to be one of the favourable snacks of camels. Many trees have an interesting umbrella like shapes, the lower leaves clearly define the exact line of how far the camels can reach for the food.

LOCATION: Al Mizra’a desert area, inland from Al Jazirah Al Hamra.

Start your excursion on the Emirates Rd going towards Dubai. Take off at the exit No. 119 and drive towards Dibba. Once you leave the roundabouts under the highway, you will arrive at yet another roundabout where you must go to the right. From here pay attention to your odometer, as 900m further, you have to take the off track and enter the desert to the right. If you proceed for 1.2km while staying on the main track, which is relatively firm sand, you will arrive at the fort.

GPS: N25o37’ 39.05” E55o49’ 57.31”

NOTE: 4WD is necessary as you need to drive over the sand, but the path is quite solid.
